Empowering Young Minds for a Brighter Tomorrow

FCA Shaping Leaders at Salem Occupations Program

“We have some really great kids here, and I know they’re going to do great things.”

At Salem, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) is no ordinary club—it’s a place where students come together to support one another, develop leadership skills, and explore their faith. Overseen by Stacey Lux, who also teaches health, weight training, and driver’s education, the FCA serves as a supportive community for students from all backgrounds, whether they are athletes or not. In this space, students take the lead, organizing activities and lessons that foster spiritual and personal growth, while creating a strong sense of belonging among their peers.

With around 35-40 students participating regularly, FCA meets every Friday morning at 7:35 a.m. for a student-led devoitional regardless of what’s happening at school. “It’s amazing to see their commitment,” Lux says. “These students get up early, show up, and they’re ready to lead.” From organizing prayer events to hosting Fields of Faith, a major gathering that draws hundreds from the community, the students drive the mission of FCA, with Lux acting as a guide and supporter.

What makes the FCA special is how it empowers students to step into leadership roles. “They’re the ones standing up in front of 30 or 35 of their peers, sharing their faith,” Lux explains. “It’s inspiring to watch them take ownership of the group and run with it. I don’t do much—it’s really their program.” The FCA also organizes events like an Easter service and participates in community outreach, showing the group’s commitment to making a positive impact.

FCA’s influence extends far beyond athletics. While many members are athletes, students who don’t play sports also find a home in the group. “It doesn’t matter if they’re an athlete or not. FCA is open to everyone, and we have students who are leaders in the group who aren’t involved in sports,” Lux says. This inclusivity is part of what makes the FCA such an important space for students at SCHS, giving them the chance to connect with others and find support during their high school years.

Though Stacey Lux plays a key role in overseeing FCA, she prefers to let the students shine. “I just want to highlight what these kids do—it’s amazing,” she says, underscoring her belief that the FCA is a student-driven organization. Her support and guidance have helped the group thrive, but it’s the students who take the initiative to make things happen.

Beyond FCA, Lux’s work in the classroom also reflects her dedication to helping students grow in all areas of life. In her health classes, she emphasizes the importance of making healthy choices that will have a lasting impact, encouraging students to surround themselves with positive influences. “I always tell them to look at their circle of friends—are they doing positive things? Because that’s who you’ll end up following,” Lux shares.

As she watches her students take on new challenges, whether in the weight room, behind the wheel in driver’s ed, or leading a lesson for FCA, Lux finds fulfillment in the relationships she’s built with them. “It’s all about relationships,” she says. “When you develop that trust, it opens the door for so much more.”

Salem Community High School’s FCA is a testament to the power of student leadership, community, and faith. Under the guidance of Stacey Lux, the group continues to make a lasting impact on the lives of students, showing them that they can make a difference in the world, both inside and outside the classroom.
