Empowering Young Minds for a Brighter Tomorrow

Harrisburg's Own: Reed Rider, A Champion in Every Sense

“Harrisburg has shaped him into the person he is today—a hardworking, community-driven young man with a bright future ahead.”

For many students, senior year is a time of reflection, a period where the culmination of hard work in academics and extracurricular activities begins to solidify a future path. For Reed Rider, an accomplished athlete, standout scholar, and sibling to two high achievers, this year is proving to be just that—and so much more.

Born and raised in Harrisburg, Reed has deep roots in the community. His parents also attended local schools, and their return to Harrisburg in 2001 marked the beginning of Reed’s journey in this tight-knit community. “Harrisburg is home,"" Reed says with a smile. ""The community here, how everyone knows everyone, it’s what makes Harrisburg special.”

Whether under the Friday night lights or walking through the hallways of Harrisburg High School, Reed is well known as a Bulldog at heart. He plays three sports—football, basketball, and baseball—and has created lasting memories with his friends both on and off the field. “It’s the little things, the small moments with friends and teammates, that I’ll remember most when I look back,” he recalls.

But the moments that happen in the spotlight can be pretty unforgettable, too. At a recent football game against Alton Marquette, Reed and the team secured a stunning 54-0 victory. While Harrisburg’s football team may not be the highest ranked in the region, that doesn’t dampen Reed’s enthusiasm. In fact, he thrives on defying expectations. “We like surprising people and going against the odds,” he admits with a grin. “We really don’t want to be ranked number one at the start. We want to earn our spot, take everyone down one by one.”

Academically, Reed is just as ambitious as he is on the field. He’s taking calculus this year—the highest-level math class Harrisburg offers—and has his sights set on being number one in his class. His confidence didn’t always come easily, though. “Late middle school and early high school were when I really found my academic path,” Reed shares. “Once I realized what I was capable of, I set goals and worked hard to achieve them. It’s rewarding to take challenging classes and get an ‘A.’”

This blend of drive and humility (we literally had to drag it out of him!) is what sets Reed apart. Despite his accomplishments, Reed remains humble and coachable—a quality he attributes to his upbringing and his family. “I’ve learned from my brother, my parents, and my coaches to always be coachable,” Reed explains. “Whether it’s in sports or in life, there’s always something to learn, always something to improve.”

Looking ahead, Reed’s future seems as bright as his present. Though he’s unsure whether his career will keep him in Harrisburg or take him to new places, one thing is clear: Harrisburg will always be his home. “I’ve been fortunate to travel and see other places, and I know this is home,” Reed says. “But I want to venture out and see what else is out there. I can always come back to Harrisburg if that’s where I’m meant to be.”

As Reed continues through his senior year, he knows this for certain: Harrisburg has shaped him into the person he is today—a hardworking, community-driven young man with a bright future ahead. His journey reflects the best of what this small town represents: pride, perseverance, and the power of community.
