Empowering Young Minds for a Brighter Tomorrow

How Sam Cameron and Dawn Torrance Energize Lincoln Elementary School

“We’re here to help them build confidence, learn to set goals, and understand the importance of perseverance. These are lessons that will serve them well beyond class.”

In a brightly lit gymnasium at Lincoln Elementary, the echoing sounds of laughter, bouncing balls, and shuffling feet are all the signs of another successful day in physical education. But these sounds aren’t just about the kids getting their daily dose of exercise—they’re the result of something special that happens every week, thanks to two extraordinary women: Sam Cameron and Dawn Torrance.

Sam and Dawn, who have been coteaching Physical Education at Lincoln Elementary for several years, are much more than just PE teachers. Their combined energy, enthusiasm, and innovative approach to fitness have transformed their classes into something every student looks forward to.

“We’ve always believed that physical education should be about more than just burning calories or playing sports,” Sam explains, her eyes lighting up as she talks. “It’s about teaching kids the importance of staying active, working together, and most importantly, having fun while doing it.”

And fun is certainly a key component of their classes. Each week, Sam and Dawn come up with creative activities that not only get the kids moving but also teach them valuable life skills. Whether it’s a game that reinforces teamwork or an obstacle course that challenges students to push their limits, there’s always something new and exciting on the gym floor.

But what really sets Sam and Dawn apart is their commitment to making every child feel included. “We want every student to feel like they belong here, no matter their skill level or interest in sports,” says Dawn. “That’s why we design our activities to be accessible and enjoyable for everyone.”

One of the highlights of their program is something the students have come to eagerly anticipate each week—Workout Wednesdays. On these days, Sam and Dawn take a break from traditional PE activities and lead the entire school in a massive group workout session. From high-energy functional movements or Ninja Warriortype activities to challenging yet fun circuit training, these sessions are a hit with students and staff alike.

“We started Workout Wednesdays to build a sense of community and to show the kids that fitness can be fun for everyone, not just the athletes,” Sam explains. “Seeing the whole school come together to move and cheer each other on is really inspiring.”

And it’s not just the students who are benefiting. Teachers and staff members often join in, and many have commented on how much they appreciate the positive energy and camaraderie that these sessions bring to the school.

Beyond the physical benefits, Sam and Dawn are deeply committed to the emotional and social well-being of their students. They understand that PE can be intimidating for some kids, so they work hard to create a safe and supportive environment where every child feels valued.

“We’re not just here to teach them how to throw a ball or run a lap,” Dawn says. “We’re here to help them build confidence, learn to set goals, and understand the importance of perseverance. These are lessons that will serve them well beyond class.”

Their efforts haven’t gone unnoticed. Parents, teachers, and even the district have praised Sam and Dawn for their innovative approach to physical education. Many credit the duo with helping to create a more inclusive and positive school culture at Lincoln Elementary.

As the school year progresses, Sam and Dawn continue to look for new ways to keep their students engaged and excited about fitness. Whether it’s introducing a new sport, organizing a school-wide fitness challenge, or just adding a little extra fun to their daily routines, these two teachers are always thinking ahead.

“We love what we do, and we love seeing the kids light up when they’re having fun and feeling good about themselves,” Sam says with a smile. “That’s what it’s all about.”

And for the students at Lincoln Elementary, it’s clear that Sam Cameron and Dawn Torrance are much more than just their PE teachers—they’re role models, mentors, and a constant source of support and encouragement. In a world where kids are often glued to screens and struggle to find time for physical activity, Sam and Dawn are showing them that exercise can be fun, rewarding, and a vital part of a healthy, happy life.
