Empowering Young Minds for a Brighter Tomorrow

Katie Riggins Sows Seeds of Success in Macomb

“Whether it’s in agriculture or any other field, knowing that I’ve helped [a student] find their path is the greatest accomplishment I could ask for.”

When Katie Riggins took on the role of guiding FFA at Macomb Middle School, she wasn’t just stepping into a job—she was embracing a mission. With roots that run deep into the agricultural landscape, Katie is determined to plant seeds of knowledge and curiosity in every student who crosses her path. Her vision for FFA extends far beyond the traditional image of farming, embracing the full spectrum of modern agriculture and its vital role in the world today.

Katie’s passion for agriculture stems from a lifetime of immersion in the industry. Raised on a farm herself, she understands the labor, love, and legacy that come with working the land. But Katie is clear that her work with FFA isn’t just about honoring tradition; it’s about preparing the next generation for a dynamic and evolving industry.

“One of the biggest misconceptions about FFA is that it’s only for kids who want to be farmers,” Katie explains. Understandable, I suppose, since the organization was officially called ‘Future Farmers of America’ until 1988, when it rebranded to the acronym, FFA, alone. “But agriculture is so much more than that. It’s science, it’s technology, it’s business, and it’s critical to every single one of us. My goal is to make sure all students, regardless of their background, understand where their food comes from and how agriculture impacts their lives.”

In her classroom, Katie’s lessons go far beyond the textbooks. She brings in realworld examples, guest speakers, and handson projects that capture the attention and imagination of her students. From exploring sustainable farming practices to discussing the latest agricultural technologies, Katie makes it clear that agriculture is not just about the past—it’s about the future.

“I want my students to see that agriculture is a vibrant, innovative field with countless opportunities,” she says. “Whether they want to pursue careers in farming, environmental science, or even agricultural law, there’s a place for them in this industry.”

Katie’s approach to teaching is not just about imparting knowledge—it’s about sparking a passion. She encourages her students to ask questions, think critically, and explore the diverse pathways that agriculture can offer. And her efforts are paying off. Under her guidance, the FFA program at Macomb Middle School has grown, with more students showing interest and getting involved.

But it’s not just the students who are benefiting from Katie’s leadership. She’s also building a strong sense of community among the parents and local agricultural professionals. Through events, competitions, and collaborations, Katie is creating a network of support for her students that extends beyond the classroom.

“Our community plays such a crucial role in what we do,” Katie notes. “Whether it’s through mentorship, sponsorship, or simply sharing their experiences, the involvement of local farmers and businesses makes a huge difference in the success of our program.”

Katie’s dedication to her students and her community has not gone unnoticed. She’s received praise for her innovative teaching methods and her commitment to expanding the reach of FFA. But for Katie, the real reward comes from seeing her students grow and succeed.

“There’s nothing more rewarding than watching a student discover their passion,” she says with a smile. “Whether it’s in agriculture or any other field, knowing that I’ve helped them find their path is the greatest accomplishment I could ask for.”

Katie Riggins is not just a teacher—she’s a mentor, a leader, and a champion for the future of agriculture. In her hands, the students of Macomb Middle School are learning to sow the seeds of their potential, cultivating the skills and knowledge they’ll need to thrive in a world where agriculture is more important than ever.
