Empowering Young Minds for a Brighter Tomorrow

LEADING WITH HEART AND PURPOSE

“Every day is an adventure,” she laughs. “But it’s rewarding. I’m constantly learning new things.”

When you walk through Centralia High School (CHS), you’ll find traces of history, tradition, and the undeniable pride of a community. But for all its legacy, it’s the people shaping the future that truly set CHS apart—and one of those people is Tracey Starr. As the new Assistant Principal, Tracey is stepping into a leadership role, bringing with her a passion for education, a history of service, and a deep connection to Centralia.

A HOMEGROWN LEADER
Tracey Starr isn’t new to Centralia. Born and raised in the city, she is a proud CHS alumna. After graduating, Tracey went on to build a career in education—one that spanned roles as a special education teacher and a daycare center owner before stepping into administration. Her journey back to her alma mater is something that feels both inevitable and meaningful. “Centralia is home,” she says. “I’ve always felt a deep connection to this community, and being able to give back through education feels like coming full circle.”

For the past five years, Tracey served as a special education teacher at CHS, working with students who needed support in both academics and social skills. But in 2023, she made the leap to Assistant Principal, a role she now shares with her colleague, Bobby Brenneisen. Together, they form a dynamic team under the guidance of Principal Reid Shipley and Superintendent Dr. Lane, who Tracey proudly notes have worked together for nearly two decades. “You don’t often see that kind of longevity in administration,” Tracey says. “It speaks volumes about the stability and strength of this district.”

BUILDING ON A FOUNDATION OF DIVERSITY
One of the things Tracey loves most about Centralia is its diversity—a trait she feels sets it apart from many of the surrounding communities. “Our student body is incredibly diverse,” she says. “We have athletes, artists, musicians, historians, and everything in between. This diversity makes us stronger because it prepares students for the real world.”

Tracey is passionate about making sure all students feel valued, whether they excel on the field, in the classroom, or in the arts. She’s quick to point out that while sports play a big role at CHS—after all, this is the home of sports legends like Gary Gaetti and Nancy Scranton—there’s equal pride in the achievements of students who pursue less traditional paths. “We’ve had alumni go on to work in Hollywood and Broadway,” she says, referring to names like Chad Beguelin, among others.

But it’s not just about celebrating past achievements. Tracey is focused on creating an environment where current students can thrive in any pursuit they choose. “Our job as educators is to make sure every student feels supported, regardless of where their interests lie,” she says.

A NEW ROLE, A NEW CHALLENGE
As Tracey settles into her new role as Assistant Principal, she’s learning to balance the administrative responsibilities that come with the title. “Every day is an adventure,” she laughs. “But it’s rewarding. I’m constantly learning new things, and Bobby has been a great mentor in helping me transition.”

One of her key focuses is working with students who may be struggling—whether academically or personally. “A lot of my background in special education crosses over into this role,” she explains. “In both cases, it’s about helping students reach their full potential, even if they’re facing challenges.”

For Tracey, leadership isn’t about dictating from above—it’s about working alongside others, listening, and always being open to new ideas. “I love fresh perspectives,” she says. “Even though there are established ways of doing things, there’s always room to improve and adapt. And that’s something I’m excited to explore.”

A FAMILY AFFAIR
Education is a family affair for Tracey. Her daughter, a senior at CHS, is taking full advantage of the school’s dual-credit program, already halfway through her nursing degree at Kaskaskia College. Tracey’s son, a sophomore, is diving into sports medicine. “Both of my kids have benefited from the incredible opportunities CHS offers,” she says proudly. “Whether it’s the jumpstart program or extracurricular activities, the school provides pathways for students to succeed.”

Tracey is excited to see where her children’s journeys will take them—but for now, she’s focused on ensuring that every student at CHS has the same opportunities for growth and success.

LOOKING FORWARD
As Tracey Starr looks ahead, her goals for Centralia High School are simple yet profound: to create a space where all students feel supported, celebrated, and prepared for the future. “I love this community,” she says. “And I’m so proud to be part of a team that’s dedicated to helping our students succeed.”
