Striking a Chord - Rayden Peterson’s Musical Ride Through Mercer County
"Mr. Ruggles has been more than just a band director to Rayden; he’s been a role model, showing him how a passion for music can be shared with others, sparking a lifelong love for the art."
In the corridors of Mercer County High School, a distinct rhythm pulses. It’s a beat, steady and sure, that seems to resonate not just in the music rooms but throughout the entire school. It’s the beat of Rayden Peterson, a senior whose love for music and earnest approach to life have set him on a path that is as inspiring as it is grounded.
Rayden, a percussionist with a penchant for the meticulous, is anything but your average high school senior. As he navigates his final year at Mercer County, he’s also planning for the future—a future that’s likely to be shaped by two of his greatest passions: music and business. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves; Rayden’s story is one worth unfolding with care.
A Musical Beginning
Born and raised in Joy, Illinois—a town whose bigger than life name belies its size—Rayden found solace in the structured environment of school. “I’ve really enjoyed school my entire life,” Rayden shares. “It’s just a fun environment, a place where I can be around friends, and honestly, it feels like a bit of a hangout.” This social atmosphere, coupled with the opportunities to learn and grow, made school a sanctuary of sorts for Rayden.
But it was in the band room where Rayden truly found his rhythm. Under the guidance of Mr. Ruggles, the high school band director, Rayden’s interest in music blossomed into something more—a calling. “Playing in the band is something I really enjoy, and I can see myself doing it as a career,” Rayden reflects. The thought of turning a passion into a profession is a dream for many, but for Rayden, it feels almost inevitable.
The Beat Goes On
Rayden’s dedication to music extends beyond just playing an instrument. He’s also considering a future in music education, inspired by the very mentor who introduced him to the joy of playing. “I’ve thought about teaching band as well,” Rayden muses. “I think it would be fun to help younger students develop the same love for music that I have.”
This isn’t a fleeting fancy; it’s a serious consideration for a young man who understands the impact of a good teacher. Mr. Ruggles has been more than just a band director to Rayden; he’s been a role model, showing him how a passion for music can be shared with others, sparking a lifelong love for the art.
A Balancing Act
But music isn’t Rayden’s only focus. He’s also looking to major in business—a pragmatic choice that speaks to his desire for stability and growth. “I’ve talked with my mom about maybe opening a bar or pool hall in the future here in Aledo,” Rayden says. The idea of combining his love for music with a business venture is appealing, and it’s clear that Rayden is already thinking ahead, weighing his options with the same care he applies to his music.
Rayden’s approach to his education has been methodical. He’s taken a steady course through his math classes, rising from Algebra I as a freshman to Pre-Calculus as a senior. While math might not be as glamorous as music, Rayden sees the value in a well-rounded education. “I just kind of went up the scale,” he explains. “It’s not just about music; I want to be prepared for whatever comes next.”
A Solid Support System
Rayden’s journey hasn’t been one he’s taken alone. His parents have been a constant source of support, attending every concert, every scholastic bowl meet, and every baseball game. “They’ve always let me make my own decisions and made sure I’m comfortable with everything,” Rayden says. It’s clear that his parents’ guidance has been instrumental in helping him navigate the challenges of high school and beyond.
As an only child, Rayden has had the full attention and support of his family. “I’ve always liked being an only child,” he admits. “It’s not so bad.” With a strong family foundation and a clear vision for the future, Rayden is well-equipped to take on whatever challenges come his way.
Looking Ahead
As Rayden prepares to graduate and likely move on to Monmouth College, where he plans to double major in business and music, he’s excited about what the future holds. Whether he ends up on stage, in a classroom, or running his own business—or all three—there’s no doubt that Rayden will approach it with the same earnestness and dedication that have defined his high school years.
And as Mercer County High School prepares to bid farewell to one of its most musically dedicated students, there’s a sense of pride that comes with knowing that Rayden Peterson will continue to march to the beat of his own drum—no matter where life takes him from here.
