Yara’s Journey of Language and Learning
“This method not only teaches the social nuances of English but also equips students with academic language.”
At Unity Point, students and teachers alike reflect the vibrancy and richness of their surroundings. Yara Embaby, a sixth-grader at Unity Point, and educator, Evelyn Barrientos-Perkins, represent a story of learning, perseverance, and mutual inspiration.
Yara, now proficient in English, came to Unity Point as a kindergartener with little command of the language. Her journey through the school’s multilingual program, guided by the tireless support of Mrs. Barrientos-Perkins, is nothing short of inspiring. Born into a family for whom English is not the first language, Yara entered school as many children do — curious and ready to learn, but also facing the daunting challenge of language immersion. Fast-forward six years, and Yara has not only become fluent but has thrived in both social and academic English.
Mrs. Barrientos-Perkins, originally from the Dominican Republic, leads the multilingual program at Unity Point. She understands the complexity of navigating a new culture and language — her own story mirrors many of the students she helps daily. When she arrived in the United States as a young adult, speaking little to no English, she worked in factories and eventually joined the National Guard to support her education. It was through these experiences that she realized her passion for teaching.
Reflecting on the differences between adults and children learning a new language, Evelyn points out that kids like Yara are naturally better equipped for success. “When we are younger, the brain is more flexible,” she explains. “Kids are focused on forming friendships and fitting in, which motivates them to learn quickly.” Yara’s social drive, combined with her intellect, made her an eager student of both the language and her academic subjects.
What’s particularly unique about Unity Point’s program is its approach to integrating English learning within every subject. Known as the Sheltered English Approach, it ensures that students like Yara aren’t singled out. They are immersed in English through all subjects, working with both their multilingual instructors and content experts like science and math teachers. This method not only teaches the social nuances of English but also equips students with academic language — the critical vocabulary they need to excel in subjects like math, science, and history.
“It’s hard at first,” Yara admits. “But I got help, and I learned.” Her teachers, Mrs. Barrientos-Perkins and others, are quick to note Yara’s hard work and determination. She made tremendous strides, recently passing a rigorous four-part language proficiency exam that includes listening, reading, writing, and speaking — a true testament to her perseverance.
Yara isn’t just proud of her personal progress; she also values the cultural diversity that defines Unity Point. “It’s beautiful,” she says, “how everyone is included — every religion, every culture.” Growing up surrounded by such a rich mix of backgrounds, Yara is getting a preview of what the world looks like beyond her rural Southern Illinois school.
For Evelyn, this inclusive environment is a natural extension of Unity Point’s connection to Southern Illinois University, which attracts international students and faculty from all over the globe. “We’re very lucky,” Evelyn says. “Even if we didn’t want it to be this way, we have no choice because of SIU. But I can’t imagine why anyone wouldn’t want it.”
Yara’s achievements are just beginning. Although she’s only in sixth grade, she’s already setting her sights high. When asked what she’d like to do in the future, she answers confidently: “Maybe a doctor or a teacher.” With her affinity for math and science, the path ahead seems promising.
Mrs. Barrientos-Perkins finds great pride in watching students like Yara flourish. “The feeling that you’ve made a difference — that’s something I’ve always wanted,” she says. And while teaching was not her initial career choice, her love for the profession is clear. “I never thought I’d want to be a public school teacher,” Evelyn reflects. “But once I started, I found my Dharma — my purpose.”
Yara’s journey is far from over, but it’s clear that she’s on the right path. Her accomplishments in language, academics, and personal growth are a reflection not only of her own resilience but also of the supportive and inclusive environment that Unity Point fosters. In Yara and Evelyn, the community sees the power of education to bridge cultures, languages, and dreams.
Yara Embaby’s story, intertwined with Evelyn Barrientos-Perkins’ dedication, showcases the profound impact of a supportive, inclusive educational system. As Unity Point continues to nurture diverse learners, the future for students like Yara shines bright, offering endless possibilities for growth, achievement, and connection.
